— Oh no! I’m starving! I need to find something delicious to eat!
He leaped from tree to tree, his tail swaying (WHOOOOSH!), his feet crunching over dry leaves (CRACK! CRUNCH!). Then, suddenly, he saw the most amazing thing in the whole jungle…
A huge, round, bright red, juicy watermelon!
His eyes sparkled! (TING!)
His belly rumbled even louder! (GROWLLLLL!)
And his mouth watered. (SLUUUURP!)
— IT’S MINE! — he shouted and dashed toward the fruit like a rocket (VROOOOM!).
But just as he was about to grab it, CREEEAK!
A slow, wise turtle with a shiny shell stepped out from behind the watermelon. It was Grandma Tuca.
— Well, well, well… Where do you think you’re going with that watermelon, Chico?
Chico skidded to a stop (SCREEEECH!), nearly tripping over his own feet.
— Oh! H-Hey, Grandma Tuca! — he said with a nervous smile. — Well, I just… I just found this watermelon here and thought that…
— Thought wrong, my dear! — Grandma Tuca chuckled. — I planted this watermelon. I watered it every day (SPLISH! SPLASH!) and waited patiently for it to grow big and sweet.
Chico frowned (HMPH!).
— But… but… I’M SO HUNGRY! Besides, you’re so slow! You’ll never be able to carry it!
Grandma Tuca shook her head.
— Chico, greed and impatience always lead to trouble.
But Chico wasn’t listening.
His craving for watermelon was stronger than his patience.
With a quick leap (ZUP!), he grabbed the watermelon and pulled with all his might (RRRRAAAHHH!).
But… nothing happened.
He pulled again (HUUUNF!).
And again! (URGH! URGH! URGH!)
Until…
PLOOOOOOF! 💥💥💥
The watermelon EXPLODED like fireworks!
(SPLAAAAAASH! SLUUUUURP! PLOP! PLOP! PLOP!)
Juice and seeds went flying everywhere, soaking Chico from head to toe!
He blinked, confused, trying to understand what had happened.
But then…
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ! 🐜🐜🐜
A HUGE ARMY of ants smelled the sweet watermelon and started marching toward him (TICK TICK TICK TICK!).
— AAAAAH! IT ITCHES! IT ITCHES SO MUCH! — Chico screamed, waving his arms (SWISH! SWASH!).
He jumped, rolled, and ran (TRIP! TRAP! TRUPE!), but the ants kept crawling up his legs (ZING! ZING! ZING!).
So he ran like crazy (VROOOOM!) to the nearest river and…
SPLAAAAASH! 🌊💦
Dove straight into the water.
After a few minutes, drenched and exhausted, Chico slowly walked back to the clearing, where Grandma Tuca was calmly eating a piece of the watermelon.
She looked at him and smiled.
— I warned you…
Chico sighed. (PFFF… SHHHH… HMPH!)
— I guess I learned my lesson. Next time, I’ll ask before taking something that’s not mine.
Grandma Tuca smiled even wider and offered him a fresh slice of watermelon.
— Sharing always makes food taste better.
Chico took the slice, chewed (NOM NOM NOM!), and, for the first time that day, truly smiled.
Moral of the story:
Greed and impatience bring trouble, but kindness and patience always bring good rewards!
